Drug injury risks due to drug errors low for assisted living patients

August 28, 2008

A study finds that the risk of drug injuries because of medication errors to patients of assisted living facilities is low, according to Yahoo! News.

The study observed 12 facilities in 3 states to determine the risk for drug injuries due to medication errors because staff members giving medication in assisted living facilities often are not licensed.

The study found a drug error rate of 28.2 percent, but of those errors 70.8 percent were time errors, meaning that a patient did not received medication within an hour of the scheduled time.

Excluding time errors from the study reduced the error rate to 8.2 percent.

Patients could be at risk for Texas drug injuries if they do not receive medications on time in correct dosages.

August 26, 2008

Hospital abuse by staff and a doctor at a mental hospital could cause the hospital to stop receiving funds after a 50-year-old man was left unattended for 22 hours at a mental hospital.

According to the federal investigation, the man choked on his medication and was left unattended for nearly a day with staff members nearby playing cards, in the medical malpractice case.

In another medical malpractice case in the same facility, a doctor punched a teen after the teen bit him.

The hospital and the medical malpractice cases are under investigation by federal authorities to determine what disciplinary action should be taken and to determine a better plan to ensure proper care of patients.

August 7, 2008

The FDA reported that Rize 2 The Occasion and Rose 4 Her, drugs marketed as dietary supplements, are being recalled by Jack Distribution, LLC because the drugs contain undeclared ingredients that could cause drug injuries because of reactions with prescription drugs.

The drugs responsible for the potential drug injuries both contain thiomethisosildenafil, an analog of sildenafil, which is the active ingredient in FDA-approved drugs for treatment of ED.

Thiomethisosildenafil could interact with other prescription drugs and cause drug injuries such as dangerously low blood pressure.
