Drug sales halted due to potential drug injuries

The Associated Foreign Press reported that Sanofi Aventis has halted the sale of its anti-obesity drug Acomplia due to the potential for drug injuries.

The company has halted sales across the European Union because the risk for drug injuries such as psychiatric symptoms has doubled in comparison to the normal risk.

The drug was found to increase the risk of drug injuries due to psychiatric symptoms such as suicidal thoughts, even in patients who have no history of psychiatric symptoms.

The company says that it will not rule out the possibility of a global halt on sales of the potential drug injury caused by Acomplia.

Texas patients who take Acomplia also face an increased risk of suffering Texas drug injuries.

Drug injuries reported to the government reach record high

October 28, 2008

The Associated Press reported that the number of drug injuries reported to the government in the first three months of 2008 reached record highs.

Over 21,000 serious reactions that resulted in drug injuries to patients were reported to the Food and Drug Administration in the first three months of this year.

Of the 21,000 reports, 4,800 were fatal drug injuries. The drugs causing most of the drug injuries were Chantix, the new anti smoking drug, and heparin, a blood thinner.

Similar Texas drug injuries may have occurred if patients taking these drugs had serious reactions to them.

Woman billed in possible medical malpractice case

October 23, 2008

A woman is complaining of receiving a bill for a hospital emergency room visit, which she waited 19 hours but never saw a doctor, causing a possible medical malpractice suit.

The woman received a bill for $162 though she never received treatment at the hospital.

Officials at the hospital say that the woman received the bill because nurses spent time checking her vital signs and determining her level of need for care, but the woman maintains that she left the facility because she had waited so long.

Earlier a man complaining of stomach pains, who also waited 19 hours in the same emergency room, later experienced cardiac arrest and died. This situation could also lead to a possible medical malpractice suit.

The hospital says it needs more beds to accommodate the needs of patients in the emergency room.

Texas medical malpractice suits could occur if Texas emergency rooms become overcrowded.

Driver in fatal auto accident not intoxicated

October 16, 2008

The Associated Press reported that the driver in a fatal auto accident that killed nine people riding a bus to a casino was not intoxicated at the time of the crash.

The auto accident occurred when the bus crashed, killing nine of the 42 people on board, many of whom were Laotian senior citizens.

Some of the victims of the auto accident remain hospitalized, but investigators have determined that the driver was not intoxicated as was suspected when the crash first happened.

Investigators are unsure whether the driver fell asleep or, as his family suggests, may have been affected by a medical condition that caused him to lose consciousness, causing the auto accident.

However, it is clear that he did not have proper licensure to operate a bus carrying more than ten people.

Texas auto accidents could occur when drivers are not properly trained and licensed to operate vehicles that carry larger numbers of passengers.

Environmental problems caused by fires

October 14, 2008

The Associated Press reported that a 750 acre fire has caused environmental hazards for approximately 1,200 residents.

1,200 people were evacuated from their homes near the scene of the environmental hazard, and a firefighter and a resident reported minor breathing problems.

The fire and environmental hazard was being contained by firefighters, but some suspect that powerful Santa Ana winds moving in later Sunday evening may cause further problems.

The fire was 20% contained near the Wildlife Waystation, an animal sanctuary in the area, but the facility was moving its animals in case the environmental hazard threatened the facility.

Environmental hazards such as widespread fires in Texas could cause Texas environmental injury and evacuations.
