Patients in hospitals and home care environments often require medical equipment to address and supply their daily needs. However, when a medical device is defective, it can mean serious injury if that device serves a critical function.
That is what has happened with infusion pumps, according to HealthDay News. Infusion pumps are used in hospitals and homes to deliver medications and nutritional supplements to patients. However, 87 infusion pumps have been recalled between 2005 and 2009 due to the risk for defective medical device injuries.
The FDA says the defects such as confusing instructions, safety alarm failures, and failure of mechanical and electrical devices have caused defective medical device injuries, including 500 deaths, and has received more than 56,000 reports of problems in five years.

Yaz, a birth control medication that has been available since 2006, is currently the center of a debate regarding patients’ risk for drug injuries as a result of taking the drug.
So are Yaz and Yasmin, another birth control, really a drug injury risk for patients? Some studies seem to think so, according to News Inferno.
Some studies have shown that healthy women who took Yaz were at risk for drug injuries such as blood clots because of the type of progestin used in the drug.
Birth control pills that did not contain desogestrel, gestodone and drospirenone types of progestin were not associated with the high risk of drug injuries.

Do you think Michael Jackson’s doctor is guilty of medical malpractice? Apparently the Texas Medical Board has concerns about Conrad Murray’s ability to administer certain drugs because it has restricted his medical license.
According to USA Today, Michael Jackson’s doctor has had his medical license restricted by the Texas board in light of his alleged involvement in medical malpractice for giving a drug normally only given by an anesthesiologist.
The Board said that Murray cannot administer propofol, the drug responsible for Jackson’s death, or any other heavy sedative that is normally administered by an anesthesiologist.

Do you know someone who has suffered injuries or become addicted to prescription drugs?
A new report from HealthDay states that both accidental and intentional drug injuries related to prescription drug abuse is on the rise.
The abuse of prescription drugs has sent more patients to the hospital due to drug injuries in the last decade than any other decade. The study found that drug injuries as a result of accidentally abusing opioids and sedatives has risen 37% from 1999 to 2006. In the same years, intentional abuse that led to drug injuries increased 130%.
HealthDay also notes that professor of emergency and community medicine Dr. Jeffery H. Coben says that though this problem is often focused on celebrities such as Michael Jackson, Anna Nicole Smith, and Heath Ledger, it is also widespread throughout the United States.
