It seems we are always learning new information about the effects of often-prescribed drugs. Now a drug used to treat epilepsy has indicated it is tied to birth injuries.
According to Reuters, researchers have found Depakote, a commonly prescribed drug for epilepsy, is tied to birth injuries such as low IQ and deformities when the mother takes the drug during pregnancy.
Researchers point to an elevated risk for six birth defects that have been deemed Depakote birth injuries.
Doctors say there are other drugs to treat epilepsy and pregnant women should try those before risking Depakote birth injuries in their children.

Reports suggest the drug injuries are made more complex with factors such as consumption of alcohol and taking medications incorrectly.

People who suffer from depression often face other health problems as well. Now HealthDay News says that seniors taking antidepressants may face drug injuries such as cataracts.
According to a study, certain widely used antidepressants such as Paxil were associated with an increased risk for drug injuries such as cataracts when used by seniors. However, the study did not show an increased risk for those who had used the antidepressants in the past, only those currently using. Also, there is no definite proof that the drugs cause cataracts.
