Prenatal smoke could lead to birth injuries

August 19, 2010

Fetuses are subject to many risks because of pregnant women’s choices. The foods they eat, drugs they use, and even the positions they sleep in all can have an effect on the unborn babies.

While it has long been thought that babies whose mothers smoked during pregnancy could suffer low birth weight among other things, babies could also suffer birth injuries such as resistance to asthma drugs later, according to Reuters Health.

In a recent study, children between the ages of 5 and 12 who had birth injuries such as asthma and whose were exposed to smoke in the womb had less effective treatment for asthma with corticosteroid budesonide.

The children showed less improvement in their “airway responsiveness,” when taking inhaled steroids for birth injuries such as asthma. The study may show that these children need to be treated with additional medications.

Protect yourself: Avandia drug injury risks hidden for years

August 12, 2010

We’ve been hearing about the risk for drug injuries associated with prescription drugs. The FDA has conducted studies to determine whether certain drugs should remain on the market after they have been associated with a risk for drug injuries. One of these drugs is diabetes drug Avandia.

According to The Post and Courier, drug injuries associated with prescription medication can be hidden for years before the public is aware of the risk for drug injuries. Such was the case with Avandia drug injuries.

Patients and doctors are unaware of these risks for years. However, patients can protect themselves from drug injuries like those associated with Avandia.

Patients are encouraged to determine whether a medication they are prescribed is new, and if it is, ask if there is an older medication that provides the same treatment; to report reactions that could indicate drug injuries to doctors right away; and to check for safety alerts for new drugs and their risks for drug injuries online.

Risky drugs need simpler safeguards to protect patients from drug injuries

Those who have dealt with drug injuries associated with controversial medications like Avandia may appreciate what some medical professionals are recommending.

According to Reuters, risky drugs need a simpler process to ensure patients’ safety when it comes to protecting them from drug injuries.

The process for protecting patients from drug injuries associated with risky drugs known as REMS (risk evaluation and mitigation strategies) should have less paperwork and be more consistent, say drug makers and pharmacy representatives.

Right now patient information packets that come with medications are the most common form of protection against drug injuries from prescription medication.

However, drug makers and pharmacy representatives are recommending more studies with high-risk medications during the drug making process. They also advocate the same safety warnings and process for similar drugs with the potential for the same time of drug injuries.
