Treating depression is a major problem for expectant mothers

May 12, 2011

No doubt upon learning of their pregnancy, mothers’ priorities, habits, and even lifestyles may change so that they can better care for themselves and their babies. Have you given up an unhealthy habit because of pregnancy? Imagine if something you had to give up was treatment for a mental health condition.

This is a dilemma that some mothers are facing after research has shown an increased risk of birth injuries as a result of use of SSRIs to treat depression, according to the Citizens Report.

While many people experience depression and get treatment for it, many pregnant women are re-evaluating their course of treatment if they take SSRIs. Due to the risk of birth injuries associated with commonly prescribed antidepressants such as Paxil and Zoloft, some mothers may seek other forms of treatment.

SSRIs during pregnancy associated with birth defects

May 5, 2011

Upon deciding to become pregnant, women have to make many health decisions that will affect both them and their babies. For example, women may have to decide whether a course of treatment through drugs is appropriate during pregnancy. Some questionable drug use during pregnancy now includes selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).

Some medications have been deemed unsafe for consumption by pregnant women due to the risk for birth injuries. SSRIs such as Paxil have been found to increase the risk for birth injuries such as heart defects 1% above the regular risk, according to MyHealthNewsDaily.

However, authorities caution women against stopping or pursuing treatment with SSRIs during pregnancy without first consulting their doctors. Not enough evidence exists to note whether all pregnant women should avoid SSRI use due to the risk for birth injuries.

Antidepressant use during pregnancy may cause drug injuries

April 28, 2011

Depression affects many people, but finding treatment through medication is more complicated for pregnant women. As with any other substance they consume, antidepressants can affect their unborn children.

According to Live Science, some antidepressants have recently been scrutinized for their presumed safe consumption during pregnancy, but in fact, some studies show that antidepressants such as Zoloft used during the third trimester of pregnancy may lead to drug injuries or birth defects for the child.

Zoloft may cause drug injuries and birth defects such as pulmonary hypertension for the baby.

Reflux drug recalled due to drug injury risk

April 21, 2011

For patients who are unable to take drugs orally, feeding tubes and oral syringes can help them get the treatment they need. However, sometimes these methods of medication can pose risks for drug injuries if the drug or medical device is defective.

Unfortunately, some patients may have to stop treatment with a particular reflux drug produced by the Israel-based company Teva if that medication is administered by feeding tube or oral syringe because it may clog the walls of the device, possibly resulting in a drug injury, according to Reuters.

The medicine, lansoprazole, is safe when taken orally.

Antidepressants could lead men to suffer drug injuries

April 14, 2011

More people seek help for mental health issues now than ever before. Treatment for issues such as depression can include therapy and medication, but what if that treatment came with problems of its own?

According to Reuters, that may be the case for men who take antidepressants. According to twin studies, men taking antidepressants could be at risk for drug injuries such as heart disease due to a narrowing of blood vessels.

One cardiologist said of the study that it warns patients and physicians that medications often present side effects that we cannot feel.

Blood pressure drug combo could lead to serious drug injuries

March 31, 2011

If two drugs work well individually, they must work well together, right? That’s what many doctors thought about commonly prescribed blood pressure medications; however, a study finds that for most people this isn’t the case. In fact, combining the drugs could lead to drug injuries.

According to HealthDay News, a Canadian study has found that patients taking a combination of commonly prescribed blood pressure medications angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) may be at risk for serious drug injuries.

Patients who take these medications together could be at risk for drug injuries such as end stage renal failure and even death.

March 24, 2011

Do you have problems managing your diabetes? The development of new drugs is exciting. Many people wait for medications that will help them deal with illnesses such as diabetes.  However, new medications often have unknown side effects that may not be revealed until after patients have taken the drugs for a while.

Avandia, a diabetes drug that has caused much controversy in the medical field, has now been associated with heart problems, HealthDay News reports.

OTC medications linked to drug injuries

March 17, 2011

Do you trust over-the-counter medications to be safe? Do you expect them to relieve your minor aches, pains, and cold/allergy/flu symptoms without leaving behind dangerous side effects? Some medications may be a drug injury risk.

According to Reuters Health, some old and trusted over-the-counter medications may be connected to drug injuries. Low-dose aspirin, a drug associated with the prevention of heart disease, has shown to put patients who take the drug regularly at risk for drug injuries.

Additionally, patients who take aspirin and some other medications, such as Plavix, could be facing an increased risk for drug injuries.

The drug injuries include stomach bleeding. According to the study, between five and 10 in 1,000 could suffer drug injuries such as stomach bleeding.

Cough and cold drugs recalled due to potential for drug injury

March 10, 2011

We all have to turn to cough and cold medications when the common cold gets us down or when a tickling cough hangs on too long. We may try to treat the pesky problem with over-the-counter drugs, or we may have to visit our doctors. What if those medications did not work as they were intended? What if they could lead to a drug injury?

According to UPI, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration reports some cough and cold medications are being recalled because they may not work as they were intended and were released to the market before the introduction of a law that required adequate testing of the drugs.

The cough and cold drugs include many that are not commonly used, but some drugs that consumers may be using are Cardec, Lodrane 24D, Organidin, and Pediahist. These drugs could cause drug injuries because they may release medications too slowly, too quickly, or not at all which could cause drug injuries.

Only a few minor drug injuries have been reported, including side effects such as drowsiness and irritability.

Infusion pumps are a defective medical device

March 3, 2011

Many consumers worry about the medications they take. They are concerned about side effects, both known and unknown, and whether the form of treatment prescribed by their doctor is the best for them. So when a medication or medical device is recalled, patients may be particularly worried about their health.

According to Medscape Today, implantable infusion pumps made by Medtronic have been recalled because the device, which is used for patients whose treatment requires continuous medication, has can cause a pocket fill, which could cause the medicine being administered to fill up under the skin instead of in the pump, causing the product to be a defective medical device.

The defective medical device is not being retrieved from the field as a result of the recall; however the company believes the errors can be corrected with instructions to physicians.
