Medical device injuries are a big problem

July 29, 2010

It’s not uncommon to hear of people going to the emergency room after accidents that occur in the home. Falls, burns, cuts, and other injuries are among the many reasons patients seek emergency medical care. But did you know that medical device injuries send more than 70,000 children and teens to the emergency room yearly?

According to the Associated Press, medical device injuries are a leading reason that teens and children seek emergency room care. However, contact lens wearers are among the most common medical device injury victims.

The study shows that medical device injuries occur because contact lens wearers wear lenses too long without cleaning them, because children/teens break hypodermic needles into their arms during medicinal or illegal drug use, because teens/children with ear tubes experience infections, and because teens getting gynecological exams experience skin tears due to medical devices used during those procedures.

FDA reviews Avandia for drug injury risk

July 15, 2010

The news comes after a 700-page review of Avandia and its risk for drug injuries and before a meeting next week to rule on the drug’s safety. In the course of the review, the FDA cites many errors in the study conducted by GlaxoSmithKline, the drug’s manufacturer.

Avandia drug injuries can include increased risk for heart disease and stroke, and it has received mixed reviews for this reason.

Yaz drug injuries affect Texas woman

July 08, 2010

Though we know there is always a possibility of side effects for prescription medications, we expect drug manufacturers to be upfront about those risks on the packaging and patient information.

However, patients who suffered Yaz drug injuries are charging that the manufacturer of Yaz, Bayer, was not clear about the risks associated with the drug, according to CBS 11.

One woman suffered brain damage after she experienced a pulmonary embolism and now requires her family’s full-time care due to the Yaz drug injury.

This woman, along with thousands of others, are now suing Bayer, alleging the company did not warn them of risks for Yaz drug injuries such as heart attack, stroke, and blood clots.

Attorney working on Fen-phen drug injuries disbarred

May 27, 2010

Weight loss is a goal for many Americans. There are many promising diets and fitness plans, and even prescription drugs that promise weight loss results. However, not all of these methods are safe and some can even cause drug injuries.

Fen-Phen is one of those, and now, an attorney who was involved in many Fen-Phen drug injury cases is being disbarred.

According to The Courier Journal, a drug injury lawyer involved in a criminal scandal involving clients who suffered Fen-Phen related drug injuries has been disbarred.

The Supreme Court moved to disbar the attorney after already disbarring and sentencing two other lawyers involved in the scandal in which the attorneys failed to comply with ethics.

Clients involved in the Fen-Phen drug injury related cases were convicted of ethics violations because they did not inform clients of the nature and amount of the settlement, they took fees inconsistent with the services rendered, they convinced clients to accept less than what they were due, and they did not properly represent the settlement of the Fen-Phen drug injury case to the Circuit Court.

Advocacy group wants drug trial halted after Avandia drug injuries

May 20, 2010

Are prescription drugs safe, or could they cause more injuries than cures? This seems to be a recurring question for patients, medical professionals, and patient advocacy groups.

Now an advocacy group wants to stop drug trials for Avandia due to drug injuries that have been associated with the drug, according to the Injury Board National News Desk.

The FDA called for trials of the drug after it was indicated that patients taking the drug as opposed to other diabetes drugs could be at a higher risk for Avandia drug injuries such as heart attacks. Now a patient advocacy group, Public Citizen, wants the trial stopped because 16,000 patients involved in the trial would be at an increased risk for Avandia drug injuries such as heart attacks.

Public Citizen also says patients participating in the trial were underinformed about the risk for Avandia drug injuries.
