Fetuses are subject to many risks because of pregnant women’s choices. The foods they eat, drugs they use, and even the positions they sleep in all can have an effect on the unborn babies.

While it has long been thought that babies whose mothers smoked during pregnancy could suffer low birth weight among other things, babies could also suffer birth injuries such as resistance to asthma drugs later, according to Reuters Health.

In a recent study, children between the ages of 5 and 12 who had birth injuries such as asthma and whose were exposed to smoke in the womb had less effective treatment for asthma with corticosteroid budesonide.

The children showed less improvement in their “airway responsiveness,” when taking inhaled steroids for birth injuries such as asthma. The study may show that these children need to be treated with additional medications.

With all the controversy about Avandia drug injuries and recalls, the FDA’s ruling on the drug may come as a surprise to some.
