Some Diabetes Drugs Linked to Pancreatitis

The prescription diabetes drugs Byetta®, Janumet®, and Januvia® have been linked to serious health problems in some users. All three drugs are meant to improve blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetes patients.

According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Byetta®, Janumet®, and Januvia® have been linked to acute pancreatitis, including severe forms of hemorrhagic pancreatitis and necrotizing pancreatitis. Hemorrhagic pancreatitis describes inflammation of the pancreas with bleeding, and necrotizing pancreatitis occurs when the inflamed pancreas destroys itself.

Symptoms of hemorrhagic and necrotizing pancreatitis include:

  • fever
  • lack of appetite or anorexia
  • nausea and vomiting
  • pale, fatty stool
  • rapid pulse
  • severe abdominal pain, which may radiate to the back

Hemorrhagic and necrotizing pancreatitis may be fatal.
