Stevens-Johnson Syndrome Lawyer
Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) is a condition that causes severe skin reactions, including rashes and blisters that can be as intense as third-degree burns. In many cases, SJS is linked to adverse drug reactions. Due to a lack of awareness about the disease, its symptoms are often misdiagnosed or overlooked, which can increase the severity of the condition—possibly resulting in death.
At Ferrer, Poirot & Wansbrough, we understand the complexities associated with SJS cases. If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with SJS, we can help you get the compensation you’re owed for medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering. Stevens-Johnson Syndrome Causes
SJS has been documented as a side effect of, or reaction to, several different types of drugs and medical conditions, including:
- malignant diseases.
- nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
- sulfa or sulfa-containing drugs.
- viral or bacterial infections.
Although the development of SJS can sometimes be traced to a known cause, between 25 percent and 50 percent of all cases arise with no apparent origin.
Severe and Painful Symptoms
As SJS progresses untreated, its symptoms can increase in severity, which can result in:
- blisters or lesions on the mucous membranes of the mouth, nose, eyes, genitals, urinary, or respiratory tracts.
- flu-like symptoms (fever, fatigue, headache, sore throat, cough, etc.).
- skin blisters or rashes.
- ulceration of blisters leading to skin shedding.
Severe cases of SJS can lead to serious long-term health consequences, including vision problems or blindness, problems regulating body temperature, severe scarring, and even death.
