Complex Regional Pain Syndrome

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), also known as Reflex Regional Pain Syndrome (RSD), is a chronic disorder that causes severe pain, swelling, and changes in skin texture in a person’s hand, arm, foot, or leg. Although there is no known cause of CRPS, the condition often develops after a traumatic injury such as a car accident, on-the-job accident, or surgical mistake.

According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, CRPS can affect both genders at any age, although it is most commonly found in women. Symptoms of CRPS can include:

  • burning sensation in the skin,
  • changes in skin color and temperature,
  • decreased mobility in affected limb,
  • increased skin sensitivity,
  • intense, continuous pain,
  • tissue swelling,
  • and more.

Reduced Quality of Life

CRPS is a progressive and often permanent condition that can reduce your quality of life and lead to severe pain and suffering. The condition typically has three stages, each with its own symptoms and severity:

  • Stage One
During the first stage of CRPS, muscle spasms, joint stiffness, and a severe, burning pain in the skin may be present. This stage can last from one to three months.
  • Stage Two
This stage is characterized by intensified pain, decreased hair growth, cracked and brittle nails, softened bones, stiff joints, and weakened muscle tone. This stage lasts from three to six months.
  • Stage Three
By stage three, CRPS becomes permanent, and changes in the skin and bone can no longer be reversed. The pain can become overwhelming and may affect a person’s entire limb. Muscles may be wasted away, and the limb may be twisted or contorted.

We Want to Help You

Attempts to treat CRPS are difficult, expensive, and often ineffective. Implanted spinal cord stimulators, psychotherapy, and even amputation of the affected limb have all been used to treat CRPS with varying degrees of success. Because the condition can’t be cured after it has progressed, most treatments aim to improve a patient’s quality of life and reduce his or her symptoms.
