Sugar Plant Explosion

A fatal tragedy rocked the town of Port Wentworth, Georgia when the Imperial sugar plant exploded and killed several people inside. The Imperial Sugar refinery was torn to shreds in the blast, resulting in more than 30 critical injuries and a fire that raged for several days.

To date, six bodies have been found in the smoldering wreckage but several people are still unaccounted for. More than 30 people were rushed to emergency care, many with serious injuries, following the explosion and subsequent fires.

Imperial Sugar was one of the largest and oldest employers in the city. Officials from Imperial Sugar said that sugar dust in one of the plant silos ignited and caused the explosion. Sugar dust can be combustible if becomes too dry and builds up a static electric charge.
