Victoza® Linked to Serious Health Risks

Victoza® (liraglutide), a drug prescribed to control blood glucose levels in type 2 diabetes patients, is known to cause renal failure and has been linked by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to an increased risk of developing thyroid cancer and pancreatitis.

The injectable medication was approved by the FDA in January 2010, despite warnings of its potential risks by two FDA pharmacologists and an FDA clinical safety reviewer. In clinical trials, Victoza caused a 3.7-fold increase in the development of pancreatitis and a 3-fold increase in the development of papillary thyroid cancer compared to other diabetes drugs.

Victoza Risks

Because of its direct effects on the pancreas, blood glucose levels, and other vital functions in the body, Victoza has the potential to cause serious health problems, including:

  • Renal failure

Victoza often causes dehydration, which can lead to renal failure or a worsening of kidney function in patients with existing renal failure. Symptoms of renal failure may include abnormal heart rhythms, blood in urine, bone damage, muscle paralysis, and more.

  • Pancreatitis

Victoza influences insulin levels in the body and may cause pancreatitis–an inflammation of the pancreas. Severe pancreatitis may lead to infection, pancreatic cancer, shock, and even death.

  • Thyroid Cancer

In animal studies, Victoza has been shown to increase the risk of medullary thyroid cancer. Difficulty swallowing, unexplained voice changes, neck and throat pain, and swollen lymph nodes are common symptoms of thyroid cancer, which may spread throughout the body if left untreated.

FDA Requires Victoza Warning Label

In response to these risks, the FDA has required Novo Nordisk to post a warning label on the medication about the possibilities of developing acute renal failure and a worsening of chronic renal failure, as well as the potential for serious allergic reactions that can require immediate medical attention.
