Zocor® Muscle Damage
The cholesterol-lowering medication Zocor
® has been linked to an
increased risk of muscle damage in
some users. The muscle damage is known as
rhabdomyolysis and can lead to
severe kidney damage, kidney failure, and even
death.
After reviewing data from a large clinical trial, the Food and Drug
Administration (FDA)
warned,
“There is an increased risk of muscle injury in patients taking the
highest approved dose of the cholesterol-lowering medication, Zocor
(simvastatin) 80mg, compared to patients taking lower doses of
simvastatin, and possibly other drugs in the ‘statin’ class.”
What Kinds of Muscle Damage Are Associated with Zocor?
The class of drugs Zocor belongs to is known as “statins.” These drugs
are supposed to lower the levels of “bad” cholesterol (low-density
lipoproteins, also known as LDLs) and increase levels of “good”
cholesterol (high-density lipoproteins, or HDLs).
Rhabdomyolysis, the severe condition associated with Zocor use, is
essentially the breakdown of muscle fibers in the body. These broken
down muscle fibers are released into the bloodstream and can be
extremely harmful to the kidneys.
Symptoms of rhabdomyolysis include:
- abnormal urine color (dark, red, or brown)
- general weakness
- joint pain
- muscle stiffness or aching (myalgia)
- muscle tenderness
- seizures
- unintentional weight gain
