We know cancer can be caused by toxic substances such as those found in charred food, certain chemicals, and the ingredients in tobacco products. Patients may expect medications taken for treatment of cancer to be nontoxic.
However, AFP reports that in a study of AstraZeneca’s drug Vandetanib, a drug used for treatment of thyroid cancer, 31% of patients experienced serious side effects that could lead to drug injuries, compared to 13% of those who took a placebo.
The drug injuries that Vandetanib could cause patients to suffer are skin conditions such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome, strokes, and lung disease.
