A 25-year-old Dallas Cowboys football player is dead, and another is facing charges in connection to the death, following a drunk driving accident that occurred late last week. CBS News says the crash happened around 2:20 a.m. Saturday in Irving, Texas.
Police reports indicate the driver of a Mercedes Benz, Dallas player Josh Brent, was speeding when he suddenly lost control of the vehicle. The car skid out of control and flipped before coming to rest and catching fire. Brent pulled the passenger in the vehicle and his teammate, Jerry Brown Jr., from the burning wreckage as rescue crews arrived and extinguished the flames.
Brown was rushed to a local hospital but died shortly after arrival. Meanwhile, officers conducted a field sobriety test on Brent, which he failed, and transported him to a hospital for toxicology testing before placing him under arrest for intoxication manslaughter.
This wasn’t Brent’s first DUI though. He was convicted in June 2009 on the charge and received a 60-day jail sentence, along with two years of probation, 200 hours of community service, and a $2,000 fine.
