A 35-year-old Dallas, Texas, man claims he was seriously injured in a car accident after repeated calls to 911 went unanswered. According to The Dallas Morning News, the man’s injury occurred September 8 at 11:50 p.m. as he stood next to Interstate 45.
Reports indicate the victim was involved in a Dallas auto accident when another vehicle rear-ended his car. He was standing next to the highway as he attempted to call 911 four times. The first three times, he said he got a busy signal. On the fourth try, he got a message saying all responders were busy at the moment. The victim then attempted to flag down another vehicle for help, but was instead struck and suffered serious injuries, including a broken arm and bruised leg. Luckily, a witness was able to get through to 911 and called for help.
The city of Dallas later released a statement saying that although cellphones can be invaluable in emergency situations, the 911 emergency response system was not set up to handle calls from cellphones and, therefore, may not be a reliable way to communicate in an emergency.
