A new report from HealthDay states that both accidental and intentional drug injuries related to prescription drug abuse is on the rise.
The abuse of prescription drugs has sent more patients to the hospital due to drug injuries in the last decade than any other decade. The study found that drug injuries as a result of accidentally abusing opioids and sedatives has risen 37% from 1999 to 2006. In the same years, intentional abuse that led to drug injuries increased 130%.
HealthDay also notes that professor of emergency and community medicine Dr. Jeffery H. Coben says that though this problem is often focused on celebrities such as Michael Jackson, Anna Nicole Smith, and Heath Ledger, it is also widespread throughout the United States.
