Prozac Birth Defect Lawyers

Prozac—also known as fluoxetine—is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant. The drug is often prescribed to treat major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, bulimia nervosa, panic disorder, and more.

On December 14, 2011 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration updated its warning that says Prozac and other SSRI antidepressants can cause serious birth defects in the lungs of newborns if their mothers took the drugs while pregnant. If your baby was harmed because you took Prozac, the drug injury lawyers at Ferrer Poirot Feller Daniel are here to help. Call us at (888) 485-8844 or fill out a free initial consultation form.

Prozac Birth Defects

SSRI antidepressants like Prozac have been linked to several serious birth defects in infants who are exposed to the drugs, such as:

Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension (PPHN)

Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension (PPHN)
PPHN is a condition that causes blood vessels in the lungs to constrict, which can result in shortness of breath, fatigue, and even death. Many newborns with PPHN require lung transplants to survive.

A study in the July 2011 issue of Archives of General Psychiatry shows that women who took SSRIs one year prior to giving birth had an increased risk of their children later being diagnosed with autism. The risk quadrupled if the drug was taken during the first trimester of pregnancy.

Septal Defect

Septal Defect
Babies who were exposed to Prozac in the womb may be born with holes in the walls of their heart, which causes poor blood circulation throughout their bodies. This condition requires open-heart surgery to correct.

At Ferrer Poirot Feller Daniel, we know life can be difficult when your child is born with birth defects. We’ll do everything we can to hold the drug manufacturer accountable for its negligence.
