Prozac Birth Defects
SSRI antidepressants like Prozac have been linked to several serious birth defects in infants who are exposed to the drugs, such as:
Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension (PPHN)
PPHN is a condition that causes blood vessels in the lungs to constrict, which can result in shortness of breath, fatigue, and even death. Many newborns with PPHN require lung transplants to survive.
Autism
A study in the July 2011 issue of Archives of General Psychiatry shows that women who took SSRIs one year prior to giving birth had an increased risk of their children later being diagnosed with autism. The risk quadrupled if the drug was taken during the first trimester of pregnancy.
Septal Defect
Babies who were exposed to Prozac in the womb may be born with holes in the walls of their heart, which causes poor blood circulation throughout their bodies. This condition requires open-heart surgery to correct.
