Many people view antibiotics as life savers: when we get an infection, we rely on them to nurse us back to health. However, when mixed with some other drugs, common antibiotics may be harmful to certain populations.
According to Health Day, some common antibiotics may cause drug injuries such as dangerously low blood pressure for older people taking blood pressure medications such as calcium blockers.
The study find that antibiotics such as erythromycin and clarithromycin could increase the chance that low blood pressure would send older people to the hospital with drug injuries.
A drug in the same family, azithromycin, is not linked to the drug injuries.
The risk of drug injury with the combination of these drugs has been known for decades, though this is the first study to quantify the risk.
