Bayer and its subsidiary Monsanto will be required to pay another substantial sum to cancer victims of their Roundup® weedkiller—this time $2 billion to a California couple who contracted non-Hodgkin lymphoma after using the product for decades.

The Alameda County jury made the third ruling nationwide since mid-2018 against Bayer concerning the allegations that Roundup is linked to the development of cancer. A study by the International Agency for Research on Cancer indicated that an herbicide in Roundup called glyphosate may be carcinogenic to humans. People can be exposed to dangerous levels of glyphosate by breathing air after the product is sprayed, drinking contaminated water, eating contaminated food, and touching treated plants.

13,000 lawsuits have been filed against Bayer’s subsidiary Monsanto regarding that allegation and the product’s possible link to cancer. Another trial is set to begin in St. Louis, Missouri, in August—the former location of Monsanto’s headquarters before the company’s purchase by Bayer was finalized in June 2018.
