A 46-year-old man who used Roundup weedkiller between 20 and 30 times per year while working as a school groundskeeper near San Francisco was awarded $289 million by a jury after he developed terminal cancer. Of the $289 million that the man will receive, $250 million are punitive damages designed to punish Monsanto for its negligence and $39 are compensatory damages.

A report by CNN says that the groundskeeper’s victory in the case could set a precedent for thousands of other cases involving Roundup users who developed cancer, including non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. 800 patients are currently suing Monsanto, the manufacturer of Roundup, on the grounds that it caused them to develop cancer.

A report by the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer said in March 2015 that glyphosate—the primary weedkilling ingredient in Roundup–is probably carcinogenic to humans. The groundskeeper’s attorney says that the other ingredients in Roundup create a synergistic effect with glyphosate, creating a greater cancer risk than what the chemical poses alone.
