New research shows that taking certain cholesterol-lowering drugs and antibiotics at the same time may put patients at serious risk of suffering life-threatening health events.
Both types of drugs have a history of health warnings being issued. In March of this year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a safety alert about Zithromax® Cardiac Dangers after a team of researchers at Vanderbilt University discovered patients taking the drug are two and a half times more likely to suffer irregular heart rhythms as opposed to those taking other types of antibiotics.
The group of cholesterol lowering medications, known as statins, also has a long history of association with kidney injuries.
Now though, a new study has shown that taking combinations of these two types of medications can pose an even greater risk of a patient suffering kidney injuries.
According to an article from Everyday Health, researchers concluded that certain enzymes in the liver metabolize statins. When antibiotics are taken, these enzymes slow down, allowing for toxic levels of statins to build up in the body. The unprocessed drugs can cause serious harm to the kidneys of the patient.
