Levaquin and Avelox May Increase Aortic Injury Risk
The aorta, the largest blood vessel in the body, carries blood from the heart to all internal organs except the lungs. A study published by BMJ linked the use of fluoroquinolone drugs—which include Levaquin, Avelox, and Cipro—to the breakdown of collagen, a protein that lines the aorta. Collagen damage weakens the structure of the aorta, increasing the risk of tearing (aortic dissection) and rupture (aortic aneurism).
Levaquin and Avelox Nervous System Injuries
Levaquin, Cipro, and Avelox belong to a class of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones, commonly prescribed to treat bacterial infections, bronchitis, and pneumonia. In 2004, the warning labels for the drugs were updated to include the risk of temporary peripheral nervous system damage—or peripheral neuropathy.
However, in August 2013, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a Drug Safety Communication updating the warnings for Levaquin and other fluoroquinolones to include the risk of permanent peripheral neuropathy. According to the FDA, symptoms can develop days or weeks after taking the drug, regardless of patient age or length of treatment.
Symptoms of peripheral neuropathy include:
- Slower reflexes
- Change in sensation to light touch, pain, temperature, and/or body position
