Actos Drug Injury Lawsuits

Actos—also known as pioglitazone—belongs to a class of drugs called thiazolidinediones. This class of drugs was introduced in the late 1990s and is designed to treat the symptoms of Type 2 diabetes. However, people who take Actos may be at high risk of developing serious health problems, including bladder cancer and heart failure. Many patients who were injured by the drug have pursued legal action to recover damages for medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering.

If you or someone you love was injured by Actos, you may be considering a lawsuit. Ferrer Poirot Feller wants to help. Our Actos lawyers can fight to get your compensation for your injuries. Actos Side Effects

Taking Actos may lead to a number of side effects and health problems, including:

  • Bladder cancer
  • Blood in urine
  • Dental problems
  • Heart failure
  • Increased thirst or hunger
  • Liver disease
  • Painful urination
  • Shortness of breath
  • Stomach pain
  • Swelling or rapid weight gain

Actos and Heart Risk

Research suggests that patients who take Actos have a higher risk of life-threatening heart problems—such as congestive heart failure and heart attacks—than people who don’t take the drug. Patients who are concerned about heart risks caused by Actos should discuss their concerns with their doctor.

$9 Billion Jury Verdict Against Actos Manufacturers

The FDA released a warning in June 2011 stating that the use of Actos for more than one year is associated with an increased risk of bladder cancer and required stronger warnings on drug labels. Actos, and other diabetes drugs, have also been linked to heart failure in some patients.

In April 2014, the drug’s manufacturers, Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited and Eli Lilly & Company, were ordered to pay a combined $9 billion in punitive damages for hiding the cancer risks of Actos in the first trial of its kind. The verdict was the seventh—largest in United States history at the time.
