Nationwide Mesothelioma Lawyers

Mesothelioma is a deadly cancer with no cure that affects the membranes lining the abdominal cavity and internal organs. The only known cause is exposure to asbestos, a mineral used in home and commercial products for more than a century. Mesothelioma often affects the lining between the lung and ribs—or pleura—and can spread to the lining of other abdominal organs and the heart.

How Do You Get Mesothelioma?

Asbestos has long been known for its fire and chemical resistant properties. But when asbestos is mined or processed, workers can be exposed to dust-sized fibers that become airborne. The fibers may be released into the nearby environment or even carried into homes on workers’ clothing. Once inhaled, the fibers lodge within the lungs where the body cannot get rid of them.

Mesothelioma has a long latency—or development—period, which can be as long as 20 to 40 years. This means that workers or their family members who were exposed to asbestos in the 1970s may be newly diagnosed with this severe condition today.

Signs of Mesothelioma

Symptoms of mesothelioma may take years to develop. When they do appear, they may include:

  • abdominal pain or feelings of fullness
  • chest pain
  • difficulty swallowing
  • fluid in the lining of the lungs
  • lower back pain
  • loss of appetite
  • persistent coughing
  • shortness of breath
  • weakness

Who Is at Risk for Mesothelioma?

Since the early 1940s, millions of American workers have been exposed to asbestos. Health problems caused by asbestos fibers have been recognized in workers exposed during asbestos mining and milling, the manufacture of asbestos textiles and other asbestos products, insulation work in the construction and building trades, and a variety of other jobs.

Studies evaluating the cancer risk of automobile mechanics exposed to asbestos through brake repair are limited, but National Cancer Institute research suggests there is no safe level of asbestos exposure.

Industries with high levels of asbestos exposure include:

  • auto manufacturing (especially brakes)
  • construction
  • demolition
  • firefighting
  • heavy industrial manufacturing
  • railroad
  • shipbuilding
  • steel working
