What is Pelvic Organ Prolapse?

Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP) occurs when organs within a woman’s pelvic region drop—or prolapse—and push against the walls of the vagina. Common causes for this condition include childbirth, surgery, or obesity. When the symptoms are severe enough to require surgery, transvaginal mesh (TVM) is often surgically implanted to help restore the structure of the vagina.

TVM has been linked to serious complications, including bladder perforation and pain during intercourse. These complications can have life-altering effects and often require additional surgeries to correct.

Pelvic Organ Prolapse Symptoms

Symptoms of POP can include:

  • bowel issues, such as constipation.
  • feelings of fullness in you lower belly.
  • incontinence or frequent urination.
  • lower back pain.
  • pain during intercourse.
  • pressure from pelvic organs pressing against your vaginal wall.
  • stretching or pulling sensations in your groin area.

These symptoms can vary in severity, and surgery is not required in every case. However, surgical procedures to correct POP are common. Harvard Medical School reports that more than one in every 10 women will have undergone surgery for POP by age 80.
