Topamax Birth Defect Lawyer

Topamax—also known as topiramate—is a prescription anticonvulsant medication originally designed to treat epilepsy and migraine headaches. In 2012, the drug was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat obesity and induce weight loss. Topamax is also prescribed for other off-label uses, including smoking cessation, cluster headaches, and alcoholism.

Babies who are exposed to Topamax while in the womb have an increased risk of developing certain congenital malformations, including cleft palate. If you took Topamax and your child was born with a cleft palate, you may be eligible to file a claim for compensation. Topamax Birth Defects Warnings

In March 2011, the FDA issued a warning that says the drug is known to be harmful to fetuses. Birth defects that may develop in babies who are exposed to Topamax include:

Cleft Lip

A cleft lip occurs when a child’s top lip fails to close while in the womb. Children with cleft lips may have difficulty breastfeeding and eating, and surgery is often required to close the openings.

Cleft Palate

A cleft palate occurs when the roof of a child’s mouth fails to close. The condition may affect the soft tissue in the mouth, or it also may affect the skull. Children with cleft palates often require invasive treatments, such as plastic surgery and dental care

In addition to physical birth defects, these conditions can cause serious psychological problems in children, including low self-esteem and social anxiety. In addition, treating cleft lips and cleft palates can be expensive and may leave facial scarring. At Ferrer Poirot Feller Daniel, it’s our goal to get families the compensation they deserve for drug-related birth injuries.
