Fentanyl Pain Patch Lawyers

The fentanyl pain patch relieves chronic pain by distributing powerful narcotic pain medication through a patient’s skin into his or her body fats, which slowly release the drug into the bloodstream during a 48 to 72 hour period. The drug’s dosage is determined by the size of the patch, but some patches have been recalled because of a manufacturing defect that could result in fatal overdoses.

If someone you love used a fentanyl pain patch and suffered a fatal overdose, Ferrer Poirot Feller Daniel is here to help. Severe Health Risks of Fentanyl

Fentanyl is around 80 times more potent than morphine, and its strength has led to U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warnings about its safe usage. FDA officials warn that patients who are wrongly prescribed fentanyl for occasional or acute pain may be at risk of life-threatening side effects or death.

Fentanyl is intended for patients with chronic pain that cannot be well-controlled using other painkilling drugs. The FDA warns that, “the amount of fentanyl in one fentanyl patch of the lowest strength is large enough to cause dangerous side effects, such as respiratory depression (severe trouble breathing or very slow or shallow breathing) and death” in patients not tolerant to around-the-clock narcotic painkillers.

Defective Pain Patches

Fentanyl patches are sold under a variety of brand names and generics. Some varieties of the patch have been recalled due to an increased risk of fatal overdose, including some patches under names including:

  • Actavis, Inc. (formally known as Abrika Pharmaceuticals, Inc.)
  • Duragesic
  • Sandoz

In addition to recalled patches, patients must also be aware of the dangers of obtaining Fentanyl from outside of the United States. In July 2008, The Associated Press reported that illegal versions of fentanyl manufactured in Mexico caused more than 1,000 deaths from April 2005 through late March 2007.
