Zimmer Biomet Recalls Thousands of Shoulder Replacement Devices

The Zimmer Biomet Comprehensive Reverse Shoulder system is designed to treat patients with rotator cuff years who have developed arthropathy (severe shoulder arthritis), as well as patients with previously failed shoulder joint replacement.

Zimmer issued a Class I device recall, the most serious type of medical device recall from the FDA, after finding the devices are more likely to fracture inside the body than stated on the product label. Shoulder implant fractures can be fatal or could also lead to a variety of health complications, such as permanent loss of shoulder function or infection.

In all, more than 3,600 devices distributed to hospitals between 2008-2015 were recalled, and some devices may have been used by surgeons up until December 2016.
