Breast Implant Lymphoma Cancer Lawsuits

Around 400,000 women receive breast implants every year after a mastectomy or for cosmetic enlargement. A variety of manufacturers produce the implants, some of which feature a textured or slightly roughened surface, while others feature a smooth coating. Now, according to researchers, women who receive textured implants may face an increased risk of anaplastic large-cell lymphoma—a rare and potentially fatal cancer.

If you, your mother, sister, or loved one underwent breast augmentation and developed lymphoma, the lawyers at Ferrer Poirot Feller Daniel want to help. With more than 35 years of experience holding medical device manufacturers accountable for their negligence, we’re ready to help protect your rights to compensation. Breast Implant Cancer Risk

Research indicates that women who receive textured breast implants face an increased risk of lymphoma, regardless of the implant manufacturer and whether they are filled with silicone or saline. According to reports collected from patients around the world, cancer linked to breast implants may develop up to nearly 30 years after implant surgery.

Information about the link between breast implants and lymphoma is not prominent on implant product labeling. According to New York Times, as late as 2015, only about 30 percent of plastic surgeons were routinely discussing cancer risks with their patients. As a result, some women face false or delayed diagnoses that can complicate their treatment.

Allergan Textured Breast Implants Recalled in July 2019

In July 2019, the pharmaceutical company Allergan recalled its BIOCELL textured breast implants and tissue expanders upon the request of the Food and Drug Administration. The recall stems from concerns about a link between these products and cancer, specifically breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma.

The FDA found that the cancer risk associated with Allergan’s implants is approximately six times greater than the risk associated with textured implants from other manufacturers. The regulatory agency said that, as of July 2019, there have been 573 reports of this potentially deadly cancer worldwide, including 33 deaths.

Signs of Breast Implant Lymphoma

Women with breast implants should watch for symptoms of lymphoma, including:

  • Painful swelling
  • Fluid buildup around the implant
  • Lumps in the breast or armpit

If lymphoma is suspected, doctors can test fluid within the breast for a substance called CD30 to make a diagnosis.

Treating Breast Implant Lymphoma

Lymphoma linked to breast implants can often be treated. For many patients, removing the implant and the scar tissue that surrounds it can eliminate the disease. When cancer spreads beyond the area around the implant, chemotherapy or radiation may also be used.
